Stop Motion

Sequence 01

Can’t decide between stills or motion for your next product shoot? Por que no los dos?

Stop motion is becoming more and more popular as a form of audience engaging content, with brands like Herschel, Ikea, Bath & Body Works and Target using the technique to showcase their products.

It’s achieved by taking multiple photos in a row with a stills camera and having the objects in each frame changing slightly to create movement. Think of it like one of those flipbooks you’d draw as a kid, where you drew a scene on each page and the only thing that changed was the stick figures.

This technique is particularly handy for the online content biosphere, because as we know, motion is usually more attention-grabbing than a static image. And one of the best things about it is that with this technique you can still use all your strobe lighting that you wouldn’t be able to use in a video, creating a really punchy, vibrant video. Strobe lighting is particularly good for capturing movement, creating strong shadows and bright highlights and capturing colours – but we’ll save that for another post.

You can also get quite creative with stop motion – it’s actually a form of animation, just done with a camera instead of drawings. It is a specialised skill and takes practise to capture effectively, not to mention the compilation and editing process, such as standard retouching which can’t be done on a full motion video.

Here’s some recent work we did for Australian Skin Clinics for their birthday sale that’s currently running until 3rd October. We also shot a range of stills which, as well as the stop motion, were used across multiple channels including social media, web banners, point-of-sale digital screens and eDMs. How’s that for versatility!

How We Turned a Client Office Into a Professional Photography Studio
